Devotional painted tile panel depicting Station IV of the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross): Jesus Meets His Mother, attributed to Brazilian Franciscan artist Fray Arnaldo Marcolino Maas.

The composition is formed from a grid of individual glazed tiles creating a continuous image of Christ carrying the cross while embraced by the Virgin Mary. Executed in a restrained monochrome palette against softly shaded blue-green tiles, the panel reflects the modernist ecclesiastical aesthetic often associated with mid-20th-century church decoration.

A Spanish inscription across the lower tiles reads:
“Encuentra Jesús a Su Santísima Madre”
(“Jesus meets His Most Holy Mother”).

Mounted within a wooden support frame used for protection and transport, the panel likely formed part of a larger devotional series created for a church or chapel installation.

Dimensions:
Approx. 21.5 in. × 21.25 in.

Medium:
Painted glazed tile panel.

Condition

Overall very good condition with age-appropriate wear. Tiles appear intact overall. Minor surface wear and small edge imperfections may be present consistent with age and handling. Mounted in a wooden support frame for storage and transport. Buyers are encouraged to review all photographs carefully for any small chips, glaze wear, or hairline cracks typical of tile works.

Provenance

Private family collection, Puerto Rico. From an inherited group of devotional works attributed to Fray Arnaldo Marcolino Maas. Accompanied by a Spanish-language appraisal report.
