Historical grouping centered on a 1935 Series United States one-dollar Silver Certificate accompanied by period correspondence and printed material dating to 1936.
Included is a crisp 1935 Series $1 Silver Certificate featuring the portrait of George Washington and the traditional reverse design with the Great Seal of the United States, including the pyramid and all-seeing eye with the motto “Annuit Coeptis” and “Novus Ordo Seclorum.” The note appears well preserved with strong color and minimal signs of circulation visible in the photographs.
Also included is an envelope postmarked Chicago, February 14, 1936, addressed to a recipient in Bremen, Germany, along with a typed letter in German dated the same day. According to the consignor, the letter discusses the recently issued dollar note and notes that the bill had become difficult to obtain as legal tender due to collector demand at the time. An English transcription of the letter prepared by the consignor is included.
Additional printed material in German from 1936 accompanies the group. The article references symbolism appearing on the U.S. dollar note and reflects conspiratorial and antisemitic interpretations circulating in some publications of the era. This material is presented strictly as historical documentation of contemporary commentary and propaganda relating to American currency symbolism.
Together the items provide an unusual snapshot of early international interest in American currency and the cultural and political interpretations surrounding the symbolism of the Great Seal during the mid-1930s.
Lot includes the 1935 Series $1 Silver Certificate, original mailed envelope with U.S. postage stamps, typed German letter dated February 14, 1936, English transcription, and period printed article pages.
